Do I have to shoot the pistol i intend to carry?

No, while you should be proficient with your every day carry pistol, use a pistol you can shot comfortably and are confident with. Often times full size pistols are much easier to shoot than the pocket pistols


How much ammo and how far are we required to shoot from?

The course of fire is 50 rounds of ammunition, 20 from the 3yd line, 20 from the 7yd line, and 10 from the 15 yard line.


What other steps/costs are required to get my License-to-carry?

Step 1: go to http://www.dps.texas.gov/ , then click on Handgun Licensing.

Step 2: Select “Online Services - Apply, Renew, Application, status or changes”

Step 3: Under “New Users,” Click Apply.

Step 4: Fill out the application and pay the $40 fee at the end.

Step 5: After filling out the app, you should receive an email with additional instructions / checklist. You should also receive an email from identogo for you fingerprints. Click on the link from the indentogo email then go through then fill out your details to schedule your fingerprint appointment. 

Step 6: Go to https://www.dps.texas.gov/rsd/contact/ltcatt.aspx to upload the training certification from LTC class. 


What should I bring for classes/range?

Required:

  • Eye Protection (Protective Glasses, RX Glasses, Sun Glasses, etc.)
  • Ear Protection (Ear Plugs, Over-The-Ear)
  • Head Protection (Cap, Full-Brim Hat, Cowboy Hat, etc.)
  • Close-Toed Shoes
  • Your pistol of choice
  • 50 rounds of ammunition for your pistol. 

Recommended:

  • Dress appropriately, we train rain or shine.
  • Bug spray
  • Sun screen
  • Secondary magazine for your pistol.

Policy:

  • Handguns must be unloaded (you will be instructed when to load.)
  • Magazines must be unloaded (you will be instructed when to load.)
  • No low-cut shirts
  • No open-toed shoes

What happens if I fail the License To Carry qualification course?

If you fail the initial LTC qualification course you take take a second attempt after the completion of the Basic Handgun Course. The Basic Handgun Course follows the License To Carry Course and lasts about 2 hours.

If you still do not meet the minimum standards, one more additional opportunity will be provided for qualification on an agreed upon day between the instructor and the student. There will be an additional charge to cover the additional time and expenses.


How do I know if I will pass the background check for my LTC?

The qualifications to receive your License To Carry are:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age (unless active duty military) and must meet Federal qualifications to purchase a handgun.
  • A number of factors may make individuals ineligible to obtain a license, such as: felony convictions, some misdemeanor convictions, including charges that resulted in probation or deferred adjudication; certain pending criminal charges; chemical or alcohol dependency; certain types of psychological diagnoses, and protective or restraining orders.
  • The state eligibility requirements can be found in GC §411.172. The federal firearms disqualifiers can be found in 18 USC 44 §922.
